If kneeling is uncomfortable, the back-lengthening benefits of the child’s pose are easily gained sitting in a chair. Simply sit tall in a chair, with your feet hip-distance apart. Tuck your chin in and slowly round your back letting your arms hang heavily to stretch your shoulders. Continue to curl downwards. When you can go no further, close your eyes and completely relax the whole back. Stay for five to 10 breaths, then reverse the process to rise up, raising your head up last.

Here’s a great technique to focus on that middle part of your back which is hard to access. Move into all fours. As you inhale lift the middle part of your back without moving your head, as if you are trying to touch the ceiling with it. As you exhale, let it drop down and allow your chest to sink towards the floor. Repeat three more times.
